Standards and Lessons

Firewise in the Classroom is adapting to the Minnesota's new science and social studies standards.  New lessons and resource links are show cased below.

Firewise lessons that match MN Science and Math Standards.

Lesson 1: Science of Wildfire:   - This lesson shows how wildfires spread and how fire is benificial to the environment and wildlife. It matches Science standards: 7.1.3.4.1 (Use data and satellite images to identify the locations of wildfires) 9.3.4.11 (Analyse the costs, risks and tradeoffs associated with natural hazards E.G. Examine building homes in the Urban Wildland Interface)

Lesson 6: GPS and GeoCaching - In this lesson students learn the science of how GPS receivers work and then learn how to use GPS receivers to collect data. It matches Math standards and Science standard: 7.1.3.4.1 and 7.1.3.4.1(UseGPS to collect data from the field)

Firewise Lessons that match Minnesota Middle School Geography Standards.

Lesson 4a: Using Google Maps to conduct a Level 1 Wildfire Risk Assessment:   - Students use Google mapping systems to assess the risk of wildfire in a Northern Community.  Students learn about GIS mapping skills, overlays, scale and aerial photography.   This lesson matches Standards  8.3.1.2.1, 8.3.1.1.1, 8.3.1.1.2  and 6.3.1.1.1 (Use Google Earth to describe how people modify their environment)

Lesson 6a: Public Land Survey and GPS   - Students learn about the Public Land Survey System and are involved in a hands on exercise using GPS receivers, compasses and tape measures to map their own grid. Students learn the how GPS receivers work and how to record GPS coordinates and how to map them.  This lesson matches Standard:  6.3.4.10.1  (Minnesota History: How and why land was changed over time)

Firewise Lessons that match Minnesota High School Geography Standards.

Lesson 4a: Level 1 Wildfire Risk Assessment using Google Earth:   -
Students use Google mapping systems to assess the risk of wildfire in a Northern Community.  Students learn about GIS mapping skills, overlays, scale and areial photography.   This lesson matches GeoSpatial standard: 9.3.1.2.2 (Use geospatial technologies to develop pland for analyzing and solving local and tegiaonal problems - E.G. wildfires)

Lesson 4b: Level 1 Wildfire Risk Assessment using JMAPS:   - Students are involved in a real project to assess the risk of wildfire in a Northern Community. Using an on-line GIS system, students learn about GIS mapping skills, overlays, scale, areial photography and spatial analysis techniques.   This lesson matches GeoSpatial standard: 9.3.1.2.2 (Use geospatial technologies to develop pland for analyzing and solving local and tegiaonal problems - E.G. wildfires)
